Hey all! It's the last week of October and I'll be ending the weekly feature with an appropriate send off with some ghoulish portraits. SLS and I have been getting the house ready for our family Halloween party and I thought it would be cool to paint some of our favorite monsters and villains and hang them around the house to give our place more "spirit."
These sketches were done alla prima in oil throughout October. If I had more time and access to better painting conditions, I would have loved to refine them, but they are what they are. I have plans to change them up every year, so now I have some time to get the next set ready for 2016 ( although, I'll most likely start on them during the middle of October). Anywho, enjoy Halloween. Also, I'm kicking off November with Inks of Truth at SAFEhouse SF with this one day event from 5-8:30pm. Details are below! See you there.

Over the weekend I made it in time to catch a couple shows that I've been wanting to see. Pida from Soey Milk at Hashimoto Contemporary and Alex Kanevsky's Unstable Equilibrium over at the Dolby-Chadwick Gallery. Last Saturday, the 24th was the final day of Milk's solo show. I could have made it to the opening, but that place is small and can get crammed very fast. Visiting there with 2-3 people at a time is much more breathable. The Kanevsky show comes down this Saturday, the 31st (Halloween). Make some time to see it before it goes down! PidaLike many others, I am a fan of Milk's work. She had somewhere in between 12-15 works displayed featuring oil paintings, mixed media drawings, preliminary sketches, and mixed media water based paintings. Her work consists of female figures, tightly painted with glazes usually on top of an abstracted & loose background. This piece, Earthlings, she added an extra element by incorporating a three dimensional object collaged on the figure. I'm usually not a fan of this type of addition, but it works really well with the piece and her show, Pida which translates to "blossom" in Korean. Below are selected photos that I've taken from the show. See more of her work on Instagram below. Soey Milk Hashimoto Contemporary Unstable EquilibriumAnother figurative painter having a solo show in SF is Alex Kanevsky. His work is a lot more loose compared to Milk's, but there's no denying his knowledge of the human form. He treats his edges more loosely and breaks up the space with patches of shattered shapes that make up both the background & foreground. There's a motion in his work that gives the painting a burst of life along with his saturated palette.
The gallery is taking preorders of his book at $85. It's a heavy book filled with spot on reproductions. I'm thinking of grabbing one. Visit the Dolby Chadwick Gallery this week, cause the show is coming down the 31st! Below are selected photos from the show. Dolby Chadwick Gallery Alex Kanevsky Tahimik in Tagalog means "silence," or "to silence." This new work falls under the Assimilation model from the Fourfold series. Coming from parents who immigrated to the States, for me it's about the depreciation of a mother language and submitting to the acculturation of a dominant lifestyle.
Pampalasa was filled with the community of SoMa last night. So full that we were clearing out the kitchen by the second hour, limiting their menu to just a few available items. Folks from the East Bay to the South Bay came to pay a visit feasting their eyes and stomachs with art and food. We had an eclectic collection of work being displayed. From paintings, textiles, prints, photographs, and mixed media works. The walls were bright yellow ( not the best to showcase art), but visitors had no problem coming up with a nose to nose view of each piece. Again, I used my crummy phone to take photos, but please try to enjoy from your screen! Zard uses kid robot Munny's as his surfaces to create his pieces. The four being presented are works inspired by Filipino food featuring Lechon (roasted pig), Taho vendor man, and a couple deep fried street food treats. See more of his work here Mona works with textiles forming constructions with weave and found objects; features, branches, moss. She even brought her weaving loom for folks to bust out their weave skills. She does more than textiles, see them here. Joan displayed beautiful prints. Here is a relief print using linoleum. She had up another lino cut and a silkscreen print. See more of Joan's printmaking here. Rey and the folks from Inks of Truth displayed their merch table featuring prints, textiles, jewelry, and other collectibles. Most of the artists featured at Pampalasa are part of the collective. Always hustling, you can see what they're up to by following a few folks. Rey Topher Then there's my stuff. I had three new paintings up of a series that's been brewing in my head for a few years now. As the series progresses, I'll dedicate a page to this new work.
The show will be up for a month, so come on by and order some Lechon Kawali, garlic rice, and a cup of Calamansi juice. See their menu or visit Pampalasa at 1261 Folsom st., SF, CA M A G . I do admit that it's not the best representation of my skills, especially that ear on the barber. I'm finding it harder to keep things in balance between looseness and tightening up. For this, I used a brush with no underdrawing. I'm starting to go back to using pencil to tighten up my drawing before I go hard with the paint. Watercolor is a tricky medium. Just when I thought I got the hang of it, the medium decides, "hmm nehh, let me show you something else." Thanks watercolor, thanks. I've got another group show coming up with the folks of Inks of Truth. It's this coming Sunday, 10/18 from 5-9pm. It'll be located at the growing restaurant, Pampalasa. I'm working on new watercolors that will be on view there. Come check them out!

Here's a watercolor of my niece out on grandma's front porch. I submitted this to the CWA National show along with another painting. Unfortunately, they didn't get in. I know a few people that submitted plein air pieces and got accepted. It's funny cause I was trying to avoid submitting plein air or studio landscape work. Darn youuuuuuus!!
Crisscross Applesauce! I Had tea with my niece on Saturday. Pictures 1 & 3 were from a different time, but this is pretty much the set up. We had Rockaroni with our tea. You can even add it IN your tea. That's how versatile Rockaroni is. It's aromatic and had an earthy mineral finish. Lamby enjoyed it.
