I'm pulling this plein air piece from 2014 for this week's feature. A Walk Downtown will be donated to the Oakland Asian Cultural Center for their Fall Gala silent auction. Honestly, I'm kind of sad to let this one go. I like this painting quite a lot, except for a few dingy bits. It's ok! I'll make another one.
During this time, specifically this piece is when I let go of using the pencil for the underdrawing and used the brush and a light value to make my marks. I also started to rely a little on sight sizing rather than estimating the whole way. I feel like my plein air skills went down a little from what I did last year. This one has the right variety of edges in the right places. I'm happy with the figures and the palette.
Maybe my choices in color harmony is what's lacking in my current ones. Only way to figure out is to keep trying. I Didn't go alone that day. I also went Jason, Nancy & Garr. To see more of their work, check them out below. Jason Conn Nancy Crookston
